MoMA Guided Tour

A mobile web experience to provide further information and spatial direction for the NYC MoMA.

Museum Visit Findings


In visiting the MoMA in NYC there was a lack of spatial direction to the space. While each piece was lightly linked to another by time period, subject matter, or artist, many pieces lacked any sort of apparent connection without an expert’s explanation. Additionally, many pieces did not receive more than a date, name, and title. 


Interviews

We conducted in person 15 minute interviews with 6 museum goers ranging from 20 - 70 yrs of age. The interviews centered around trying to understand how these individuals liked to interact with a museum, their wants, and dislikes. Despite a limited sample size, findings were revealing to us in understandings the variety of museum experiences. Core variables in peoples’ opinions related to art history knowledge, consideration to learn, and desire for novelty.

What if - gallery viewers had more direction when moving through the space?
What if - museum attendees had a easy way to learn further context behind exhibitions?
What if - museum attendees were more personally challenged when in exhibitions?

Develop a mobile web experience for MoMA NYC visitors that enhances their understanding of exhibitions by offering additional context, facilitating questioning, enabling interactivity, and providing comprehensive guidance beyond what is available within the physical space.
